What to Wear for MMA Training? The Quick Guide Nobody Gave You.

Training MMA isn't just about technique and strength. The clothes you wear can make the difference between a comfortable workout and one filled with distractions, discomfort, and even injuries. Here's what you need to know.

1. Avoid cotton

While it might seem comfortable, cotton absorbs sweat and stays damp. This leads to friction, bad odors, and a risk of chafing. Plus, it loses its shape and clings to the body, hindering your movements.

Better: Use technical materials that are lightweight, breathable, and quick-drying. This keeps your body cool, dry, and free to move.

2. Rash guard: not just for grapplers

A well-fitting rash guard protects your skin from friction, prevents scrapes from the mat or your partner, and helps regulate temperature. Plus, it keeps everything in place. No loose shirts riding up or getting tangled.

3. Shorts designed for fighting

Training in running shorts is not the same as training in MMA shorts. The right ones are designed to withstand pulls, kicks, and submissions, without limiting your range of motion.

Avoid those with zippers, buttons, dangling drawstrings, or rigid materials: they can injure or hinder you in a fight.

4. Protection and grip: gloves and shin guards

If you're going to train with contact, you need gear that fits well and is designed for MMA. No regular boxing gloves if you're going to grapple. MMA gloves allow for grip and finger mobility.

The same goes for shin guards: look for ones that don't shift, don't chafe, and truly cushion.

5. Less is more

In MMA, everything you wear should have a function. If it gets in the way, chafes, shifts, or makes you think about anything other than fighting... it's not useful. Training with the right gear allows you to focus 100% on your technique and performance.
